Welcome to the winter edition of The M Word.

As we head into the festive season, a time of reflection and good will, we’re reminded how important it is to give back.

Supporting our local communities has always been a core part of our business and it’s an area that I am particularly passionate about. We’re proud to continue sponsoring several charity events across the Thames Valley, including the Reading and Marlow Santa Runs, which raise an incredible amount for local charities. This year, many of our team have been donating their time through our volunteer days, and we continue supporting the incredible efforts of one of our team members, Jackie Page-Smith, who has collected toys for Reading Family Aid’s Toys for Teens appeal for many years, helping to bring joy to families facing hardship during a time that should be full of celebration.

I hope you enjoy this issue which brings you our latest expert insights on the risks that come into sharper focus over the festive period, from practical ways to safeguard your home over Christmas, to flood prevention guidance and the growing considerations around battery safety.
If you would like further advice regarding these insights, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Wishing you an enjoyable run-up to the holiday season, and as always, we’d be delighted to hear any feedback you’d like to share.

Best wishes

Building a better community - our commitment to giving back

As the festive season unfolds, we’re delighted to continue supporting celebrations across Marlow and Reading, including sponsoring the Marlow Christmas Lights, and the Marlow and Reading Santa Fun Runs. Being part of these festivities is about helping create moments that bring people together, support local charities, and celebrate the spirit that makes our towns special, whether cheering on participants, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

We’re also pleased to continue our support of The Toys and Teens Appeal which supports children across Reading who might otherwise not receive a gift at Christmas. Each year, the community is invited to donate new toys and presents, which are collected from donation points, local businesses, schools, and places of worship. These gifts are then carefully sorted and distributed to families, helping to bring a little joy and comfort to young people who need it most.

We’re especially proud of our very own Jackie Page-Smith, who has been volunteering with the Toys and Teens Appeal for many years. Her ongoing dedication reflects the true spirit of giving, and she shared a few words about what keeps her so committed:

“I would definitely encourage other companies to donate. The sense of giving back to our local community, and hearing what a difference it makes to the families, is my reason for continuing the support year after year.”

Lithium battery risks in 2025: What‘s changed and how to protect yourself

Lithium-ion batteries power almost every aspect of modern life, from smartphones and power tools to electric vehicles and industrial machinery. But as their use has grown, so too have the risks.

According to new research from QBE, UK fire brigades are now tackling at least three lithium-ion battery fires every day, marking a 93% rise since 2022. E-bikes alone accounted for nearly a third of these incidents last year, underscoring how widespread and unpredictable these fires can be.

As these incidents increase, insurers are becoming more cautious about the risks linked to lithium-powered devices, especially in storage, logistics, and manufacturing environments. For businesses that handle or store batteries, proactive risk management is no longer optional, it‘s essential.

Cyber safety during the festive period

As millions of shoppers head online to do their Christmas shopping, authorities are urging everyone to stay vigilant. Recent research shows that more than seven in ten Britons are worried that AI is making it easier for criminals to commit online fraud, concerns that are well justified. During last year‘s festive period alone, UK consumers lost over £10 million, with victims losing an average of £775.

To help combat this growing threat, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched its nationwide Cyber Aware campaign, running throughout December. The campaign highlights six simple behaviours that can significantly reduce the risk of online crime such as using strong passwords, MFA (Multi-factor authentication) and keeping devices updated.

With scammers increasingly exploiting seasonal shopping, staying alert to common tactics and following this guidance can make all the difference during the busy festive season. For more advice on staying safe online this Christmas, our Cyber Resources page has everything you need to stay protected.
